The N737, the road between Enschede and Deurningen, was known as a narrow, not always very safe road where, moreover, traffic flow sometimes left much to be desired. The road needed maintenance and the Province of Overijssel renamed it the Innovation Route. Strukton Wegen en Beton joined forces with a number of partners to work on the smartest road in the Netherlands. In particular, the aim was to improve traffic flow, improve safety, reduce CO2 emissions and lower noise pollution.
Innovadis is involved in this project as a system integrator. To ensure that the road becomes a paragon of technical excellence, Innovadis has linked the various technologies together. The control of the traffic lights is one of the many components of this innovative road. Using the latest technologies immediately ensures that the road is prepared for the future.
Traffic around the intersection is detected by sound. Together with information from the detection loops in the road, this information is shared with the traffic lights.
This allows for better flow when traffic is busy by reducing waiting times. There is also a dynamic lane that can be used in two ways depending on traffic density. For example, the lane can be used only for left-turn traffic or for left-turn and straight through traffic
Traffic is detected by sound. Together with information from the detection loops in the road, this information is shared. Thanks to sound detection, accidents at the intersection can be "spotted" after which emergency services are automatically alerted and public lighting is switched to maximum strength. Talking Traffic also allows this information to be provided to drivers so that they can adjust their driving behavior accordingly.
When a tractor holds up traffic it is noticed thanks to its weight and speed. A tractor is then automatically prompted to use the passing lane and is signaled when it may rejoin the road. The system then alerts rear-passing traffic that the tractor is about to merge again. This avoids holding up normal traffic.
